Report of the Department of English 2012-13



The department of English conducted varied activities in the academic year 2012-13.

Collaboration with the Department of English, HongKong Polytechnic University
The most remarkable achievement of the department is its collaboration with the Department of English, HongKong Polytechnic University, Kowloon, HongKong in December, 2012. As a part of collaboration Dr. Christina DeCoursey, MA Programme Leader, the Department of English, HongKong Polytechnic University came to the college on 31st December, 2012. She conducted “Business English Course through Animation” for the students of the nearby colleges and our college. She also conducted lectures for UG and PG students.  Her stay till 3rd February, 2013 enriched the students, staff and the department in every respect. Through this collaboration the staff members and students of the department can avail the opportunity of visiting the HongKong Polytechnic University for their research work and further studies.  

Remedial Teaching
The staff members of the department conducted the Remedial Teaching sessions for the students of FYBA and F.Y.Bcom from 2nd July, 22012 to 7th July, 2012. 

Workshop on “Writing Skill”
  The department organized a one day Workshop on “Writing Skill” on 9th July, 2012. A senior academician Ms. Anita Joshi from Houston, Texas conducted the Workshop. “English language is simple to learn and it is very easy to write in English if the learner takes conscious efforts. Writing is a skill which has to be taught effectively by teachers. The teachers should make use of novel techniques and task based activities while teaching the writing skill”, opined Ms. Anita Joshi, a senior academician from Houston, Texas, USA.  The department organized a one day Workshop on “Writing Skill” on 9th July, 2012.  She conducted some task based activities which were enjoyed by the students. She shared with students some techniques of writing flawless English. Principal Dr. Nitin Ghorpade was the Chairperson of the Workshop.

Soft Skills Development Programme
The Department organized a 10-day Soft Skills Development programme from 10th August 2012 to 24thAugust 2012 in co-ordination with the University of Pune. 30 students were the beneficiaries of the course. Total 20 sessions on varied topics related to soft skills were conducted.

English Improvement Course
The department conducted the English Improvement Course from 24th July to 10th October, 2012. A special software of self assisted English language learning is installed in Computer Science Laboratory of the college. About 29 students from F.Y.B.A. and S.Y.B.A. attended the practicals. The following modules are included in the software: 1) Reading 2) Listening 3) Writing 4) Speaking 5) Pronunciation. Each module includes explanation and exercises. The students enjoyed the exercises. The course proved to be beneficial for the students as it enriched their language skills. The course was monitored by Prof. Ashutosh Thakare.

What is Career?
A Career Guidance Workshop was conducted by the department on 30th July, 2013. Advocate Bhushan  Panse guided the students on “What is Career?” 45 students and the staff members attended the workshop.

POSTER COMPETITION
 The Department of English organized a Poster Competition on 16th August, 2012 in order to develop students’ interest in English Language and Literature. The aim was to inculcate research discipline amongst the students.  The Competition was inaugurated at the auspicious hands of Dr. Ashok Chaskar, Dean, Arts and Fine Arts, University of Pune. The staff members of the Department guided four students each. The posters were displayed in Room 32. The Panel of Juries examined and declared three winners of the Competition at PG and UG levels. The following students were given the prizes at the hands of Principal Dr. Nitin Ghorpade.

Spoken English Course:
The Spoken English Course was conducted for 10days from 4th September, 2012 to 25th September, 2012. There were 20 students in the batch. The course got a good response from the students. The students from Arts, Commerce and Science faculties gave their active participation. The objective of the Course is to provide students with the basic global competency, i.e., the ability to communicate effectively in English. In today’s globalized world nobody can deny the importance of the international language English. The mastery over the English language is a prerequisite to be successful in life. This Course aims to provide the students opportunities for developing their speaking skill.  Dr.Shilpagauri Ganpule was the co-coordinator of the course and Prof.Namrata Alhat and Prof. Rupal Waghmare conducted the course.  
Publicity:
The views of students namely, Ms. Aruna Shinde, Ms. Deepali Sutar, Ms. Manisha Auti, Mr. Satish Thakar, Mr. Pooja Suryavanshi, Mr. Lokesh Sutar, Ms. Shilpa Gaikwad regarding the “Business English Course through Animation” were published in Daily Maharashtra Times on 12th February, 2013.

Avishkar 2012
Our PG students Ms. Shraddha Deshpande, Ms. Jyoti Auti and Mr. Vijay More participated in Avishkar 2012 the Poster Competition organized by Pune University.

Study Tour to the University of Pune
65 students and the staff members of the department visited the Jaikar Library, the C DAC and the Department of English, Pune University. Professor Dr. Raj Rao, Head, Department of English, addressed the students and spoke on “The Employment Opportunities in English”. Dr. Chandrani Chatterjee talked on “Translation Studies” and Prof. Hemant Shirsat guided the students on “Technical Writing in English”. It was indeed an enriching experience for the students.

International Conferences/Publications of the Staff:
Dr. Sangita Ghodke presented the poster entitled “Post Empire Imaginaries in V. S. Naipaul’s Imaginaries of India: Heritage as Legacy in the international conference held in Bern University, Switzerland.  She also presented a paper entitled “Consequences of Marginalization: Mothers in Selected African Fiction” in an international conference held in Jadhavpur University, Kolkatta. Dr. Sangita T. Ghodake is appointed as a recognized guide for M. Phil. and Ph. D. by Pune University in May 2012. Her two ISBN books are under publication. Two UGC Minor Research Projects of Dr. Sangita Ghodke and Dr. Shilpagauri Ganpule are going on.  Dr. Shilpagauri Ganpule Presented a paper entitled “The Role of Audio Visual Aids in the Teaching of Drama with Special Reference to Shaw’s Saint Joan” in an international conference 2nd APELA held on 2nd and 3rd October, 2012 in HongKong Polytechnic University, Kowloon, HongKong.

Students’ participation in Seminars/Workshops and Achievements:
·         The PG students of the department enjoyed the live performance of the veteran playwright Mahesh Dattani’s play “Final Solutions” organized by Wadia College, Pune and held in Bharat Natya Mandir, Pune on 20th March, 2013.
·         6 students of the department participated and presented papers in a two day State Level Workshop on “Holistic Healing: A Journey to Optimal Wellness” organised by Fergusson College, Pune on 8th and 9th March, 2013.
·         The papers of Ms. Aruna Shinde and Ms. Arti Gaikwad were published in the e book published by the organizers.
·          7 PG students participated in a two day State Level Seminar on “Data Collection and Interpretation for Research” organised by M. A. Rangoonwala Institute of Hotel Management and Research, Pune on 12th and 13th March, 2013.
·         Ms. Aruna Shinde, M.A. II got second prize in Group Discussion Competition organized by Department of BBA and BCA on 26th February, 2013.
·         Ms. Manisha Auti, SYBA, student stood first in a District Level Competitive Examination ‘Jidnyasa’ and was felicitated in Jalgaon.
