Soft Skills Development Program 2011-12
'The Soft Skills Development Program 2011-12' was arranged by The Department of English during the period 23rd August 2011 to 6th September 2011. The program continued for ten days. To develop the soft skills of students, notable speakers were invited to conduct lectures on varied soft skills.
Speaker - Principal Dr. Nitin Gorpade - ‘Interview Techniques’
Principal Dr. Nitin Ghorpade inaugurated the programme. He gave a speech on 'Interview Techniques'. He elaborated the techniques that can be used to 'crack' any kind of interview. As his lecture progressed, he also talked about his personal experiences with interviews. This practical information was much appreciated by students and they must have learnt a lot about how to face interviews with confidence.

Principal Asmita Dani - ‘Mass Communication and Media’
Asmita Dani, Director of Mass Communication, Indira College, talked on ‘Mass Communication and Media’. She explained the relationship between Media and Mass Communication and how media can be used for mass communication. In her lecture, She presented the clear picture of the Media Industry, the opportunities that are available in this sector. Creativity, as she explained to students, is something that cannot be learnt but developed through persistent efforts.
Day 5
Mr. Saiprakash Belsare - ‘Extracting Maximum Out of Your Time’
Mr. Saiprakash Belsare guided students on ‘Extracting Maximum Out of Your Time’. Mr. Saiprakash Belsare stressed the importance of defining goals, planning, sorting out priorities, avoiding procrastination and use of will power to achieve objectives. In an interactive session, Groups of Students were asked to suggest a business idea and to do a brainstorming on that idea. Later on, as groups explained their business proposals, some ‘critical’ questions were asked by other groups and in the end, a winner was chosen.

Dr. Vandana Pimple - ‘Effective Public Speaking’
Dr. Vandana Pimple’s gave a speech on ‘Effective Public Speaking’. She elucidated the various qualities that need to be mastered in order to be a good orator. She emphasized the use of strong will power, confidence, in-depth preparation of your subject, identifying your audience, speaker’s dress code, body language, variation in pitch of voice, use of pause. The latter part of the session provided students with an opportunity to speak on their favorite subject for about 3 minutes. Though reluctant at first, number of students spoke later, some giving their very first speech. Thus the objective of the session, to make students speak with confidence, was achieved with success.
Day 7
Principal Nisha Belsare. - ‘Personality Development’
Principal Nisha Belsare talked on ‘Personality Development’. She told students that Personality Development not only incorporates improving your communicative abilities and host of other skills but also healthy body with healthy mindset. In her lecture, Principal Nisha Belsare pointed out that Self inspired, dedicated and goal oriented persons will always succeed in grabbing the opportunities and be successful in their lives. Her lecture explained every aspect of Personality Development, which has become the key word for today’s corporate world.
Day 8
Dr. S. P. Ganpule - ‘Mastering Paralanguage’
Dr. Shilpagauri S. Ganpule’ explained to students the importance of ‘Mastering Paralanguage.’ The prefix ‘para’ in Paralanguage denotes the language which goes beyond our day to day language. It is a language we use to express ourselves through our body posture, facial expressions, gesture, hand movement etc. Dr. Shilpagauri Ganpule stressed that even before we speak, a lot can be said through above mentioned things. As they mirror our actual state of mind, we must learn how to represent ourselves with confidence and authority. In an interactive session, students were asked to speak in front of the audience and their mistakes were commented upon.
Day 9
Principal Shailaja Sangle delivered her lecture on ‘Positive Thinking’. She pointed out, that in things that happen in our life, 85% of our attitude and 15% of hard work is responsible for them. To illustrate her point, she made use of no. of simple stories which had that characteristic positive attitude in them. These stories were much enjoyed by students and they proved very effective in conveying the message. Positive people, as Principal Sangle explained, will always take responsibilities, avoid giving excuses and they will turn every calamity into a golden opportunity.
Day 10
Mr. Sunil Adhate - ‘Presentation Skills’
The concluding day of the program started with Mr. Sunil Adhate commenting on ‘Presentation Skills’. In a highly interactive lecture, he gave students some written text, which included some lines of poems, passages, famous quotes etc. Students were asked to read them aloud in front of the audience. The objective of this activity was to gauge the presentation skills of students, and some students did succeed in presenting the text with proper use of intonation, pauses and voice quality. In the latter part of the session, Mr. Adhate commented on Students’ performance. He also gave some very useful tips on how to give an effective presentation. He stressed that one should always keep a diary handy for noting down all the useful sayings, quotes, inspirational stories, which can be used in number of situations to make one’s presentation effective.
After Mr. Sunil Adhate’s Lecture , as this was the last of the program, students were given chance to comment on the program. In the end, students thanked The Department of English for arranging such a workshop and expressed their will to attend some more programs like this in future.
